Plastic Carry Bags

The Chandigarh Administration has now banned polythene and plastic carry bags in the Union Territory.

Those who breach the ban can face a prison term of up to 5 years and/or a fine of Rs.100,000. Repeat offenders may face up to 7 years imprisonment and/or an additional fine of Rs.5,000 per day.

The environmental hazards caused by the use of plastic/polythene carry bags appear to be the main argument to support this ban.

If only each and every state would follow suit and implement it, I am sure this would be very effective tool to combat menace created by plastic bags that is polluting all water bodies. The worst situation is when animals swallow them and die an untimely death.
